Beloved Consumer,
These days it seems that more and more of our attention is being directed by the media and society to economics, trade, goods and money. The stock market is major news; the economic well-being of oneself and one's loved ones is and has been for quite a long time the measure of worth. Are you doing well in life? One only has to look at your net worth — yes, "net worth" — to find your worth.
Is this as it should be? Perhaps there are things worth striving for that are not related to economics. Things — I use the term quite loosely here — which won't be showing up on your balance sheet or mine, but which are generally held in high regard; things for which many of us, if given the chance, would trade our net worth. And yet, they are not the focus of attention. Why not?
Why do we buy proxies for those things that we really desire instead of working to make those things real? Perhaps we are simply lazy or don't know where to begin.
So, let us focus on those things worth striving for. If it takes an economic context to make them seem desirable — desirable, perhaps, as a big-screen TV or a new pair of shoes — then so be it. Perhaps with a little humour, we might be inclined to buy what it is we want. If nothing else, I would be happy to know that one has thought about these things that I find worthwhile.
Happy shopping!
